Do I have to have my wisdom teeth extracted?
Whether or not you need your wisdom teeth removed depends on the level of development and/or impaction of your wisdom teeth, the size of your mouth, and the molars’ position. If the position of your wisdom teeth threatens the health of your other teeth, Dr. Daniel typically recommends removal. In addition, if your mouth is too small and the growth of wisdom teeth will cause additional damage to other oral structures, we recommend removal. The best way to find out if your wisdom teeth require extraction is to visit our office for a consultation. Dr. Daniel can examine your condition and determine an appropriate treatment plan.
How do I know when to have my wisdom teeth removed?
Wisdom teeth can be removed at any age. Many people think that once they get older, it’s too late to have wisdom teeth extracted; however, even fully developed wisdom teeth can be removed from older patients. It is significantly easier to remove wisdom teeth early, before they have the chance to fully develop. If your wisdom teeth are impacted or causing discomfort, we recommend having them removed right away. If your wisdom teeth have grown in normally, they can be extracted just like any other tooth. If you’re unsure if it’s the right time to have your molars extracted, please visit our office for a consultation appointment.
Will having my wisdom teeth extracted hurt?
At the practice of Dr. Christopher Daniel, your comfort and safety are our top priorities. We offer a variety of anesthesia options to ensure you are comfortable through every step of treatment. Whether you need just a simple numbing agent or you’d like to sleep comfortably through your removal procedure, we have the anesthetic to fit your needs. In addition, Dr. Daniel may prescribe you with narcotic medications for after the procedure to eliminate any pain or discomfort; however, most patients report only needing a couple of over-the-counter medications (Tylenol® or Advil®) to relieve discomfort.
I can’t feel my wisdom teeth, so can I leave them alone?
Wisdom teeth do not always present painful or noticeable symptoms, but this does not mean they don’t need to be removed. Impacted wisdom teeth can develop an infection or grow towards your healthy teeth without you feeling it or realizing it. The only way to know for sure if you need your wisdom teeth removed or not is to attend a consultation with Dr. Daniel. He can examine your mouth and determine if your wisdom teeth pose a threat to your oral health or if they can be left to grow into their proper position.
